After your training efforts, you will be greeted with 3 meals per day made of delicious, local, fresh, natural ingredients cooked by our marvelous chef Pia.

  • Community

Meet a bunch of like minded friends, train together, share stories over the camp fire and create life-long connections.

It’s no secret the modern world is full of pressure. Pressure comes at us from our governments, society, jobs, friends and family. On top of it we put tremendous pressure on ourselves for all kinds of reasons.

The majority of people respond to this pressure by trying to push it back and overcome it by force, or working to evade it and hide from it, but there is a third option. With proper training one can learn to confront pressure and dissolve it through a process of opening and releasing. This process is at the heart of the internal arts of China that I learnt, but is often overlooked in favour of flowery movements and empty forms.

Each year at retreat, we dive into the development of the fundamental qualities rather than fast forwarding to the “advanced” practices as is sadly common today. It’s not a quick fix, it’s proper old school type practice which you have to do consistently over a long time. The retreat is a moment to immerse deeply into this process from many perspectives: through the body, the breath, the mind and the living animate forces around us.

It is perfect either as a first timer to get some real fire going (which you’ll need to keep up with after you leave, but you’ll have the tools now), or as a repeat attendee for a moment of more intensity where you can move past some sticking points.

Last year we had a lot of fun, and there was such a good mix of good ol’ fashioned hard work, and plenty of laughs. We roughly covered the following ground:

  • Physical, Internal, Mental (dual, bound by linear progression), wrapped in a non-dual concept that sees everything as the infinite taking a currently finite form
  • Opening and releasing. Too much opening gets rigid, too much releasing collapses. Finding the midpoint
  • Yin, Yin/Yang, Yang – each just as important as the other
  • Structural centering and alignment using open/releasing principles
  • Rolling into the midfoot
  • Opening and closing the deep hip
  • Decompressing the spine
  • Releasing pressure from a partner to the midfoot
  • Releasing into the breathing structures
  • Using the hands to help the mind soak into the body and shape the lower center (aka Dan Tian Gong)
  • Connecting the shoulders
  • Exploring extremities to know the center: pushing, pulling and releasing through weight transitions
  • Releasing into the step while walking
  • The ‘square’ for weight transitions forward and back
  • Opening and releasing the eyes, sinking back to the brain stem, absorbing the brightness of the sun without tension, released movement of the eyes
  • Surrendering to the 5 senses, arranging them around the heart, letting the ‘absence’ in
  • Don’t forget the exoteric fun! Handeye, footeye games with handball and jianzi to balance the deep work
  • Coordination, spatial awareness, the development of the Po
  • Partner rhythms, getting tangled and releasing back to the pattern
  • Studying mental structures, orienting the mentation towards the present, releasing the mind into imaginal shapes, exploring imagination and the possibility of connection to external agency via imaginal structures.
  • Finally there was definitely a big study of how insanely delicious Pia’s food is

THE FINE DETAILS

ABOUT

Join us in the rolling hills of the Noosa Hinterland to camp in the forest and dive deeply into an immersive experience of self-cultivation practices. Over 5 days I will present my approach to internal and external training, inspired by the Daoist and Chinese internal arts. You will learn exercises to open, connect and stabilize your bodily structure, how to effectively sink your awareness into your body, and explore the functions of energetic movement and the mind – all while soaking in the natural rhythms of the forests, caves and hills, free from the distractions of daily life.

No experience is necessary, all of the practices will be introduced in depth and can be scaled to any level of experience.

Natural Rhythms

This is an event designed to immerse us in the practices, as well the rhythms and surroundings of the natural world.  For a full experience, we ask that participants do not bring/use any electronic devices for the duration of the retreat. Leave behind your phones, tablets, laptops, watches (smart and regular) and spend the week connecting with yourself and the world around you the old fashioned way.

For those who must remain in emergency contact, please do so discreetly away from other participants. There are very few power points so best to bring charging packs.

Who is the Retreat For?

The methods I will share can act as a complete practice in and of themselves, or as a way to ‘supercharge’ and understand more deeply any existing physical or spiritual practice you may have. The exercises are inspired by the Daoist and Chinese Internal Arts that I have studied for 20 years, but not limited to them. You do not need to be a Daoist, martial artist or any other ‘ist’ to enjoy the benefits of these practices, and so complete beginners are welcome.

If you already have a practice of yoga, martial arts, qi gong, tai chi, meditation etc, this workshop will bring you a new way of looking at your art, enriching it and possibly helping to reveal any hidden sticking points you may be experiencing.
